The Rebels (10-3) saw Barry Odom depart for the vacancy at Purdue on Dec. 8, less than 48 hours removed from a loss to Boise State in the Mountain West championship game with a spot in the College Football Playoff at stake.

The Golden Bears (6-6) won’t have Fernando Mendoza after the two-year starting quarterback announced last Wednesday he was entering the transfer portal, less than three weeks removed from leading a game-winning touchdown drive against rival Stanford and delivering an emotional postgame interview after retaining the Axe trophy and securing postseason eligibility.

SMU vs. Penn State

Penn State has been a solid -8.5 favorite in this College Football Playoff game.

Transfer Portal Controversy

SMU coach Rhett Lashlee took a moment while preparing his team for its most successful season ever and an appearance in the College Football Playoff to address the ever-growing concern over the open transfer portal window.

His problem isn’t with players wanting to transfer. Rather, Lashlee’s issue, one shared with other coaches, is the timing for those with teams still playing, whether in the 12-team playoff like the Mustangs or in one of the many bowls into early January.

This comes as Penn State backup QB Beau Pribula is set to enter NCAA Transfer Portal, leaving the team ahead of the College Football Playoff

In a press conference on Tuesday, Lashlee didn't hold back his opinion on the timing of the small window to transfer as he said it puts athletes in a tough spot.

"It's terrible," Lashlee said. "I feel so awful for our kids and kids around the country. We talk about making a system that is all great for them, but we haven't. I mean that's part of your job as adults is to do what's best for young people, not what they want necessarily, and they don't want this."

“I hate it for our players. I told them ... I hate it that you guys, you get a chance to play in the College football Playoff, yet you are either forced to decide do I go in the portal or not. Or let’s call it like it is, people are bombarding our roster trying to pick people off our roster, and we’re trying to focus on the playoff.”

The Mustangs head coach suggests the window be only in the spring as that is the end of the "scholastic year," however, he didn't specify exactly when.
